What was Microsoft thinking?

First came the announcement that Microsoft is laying off workers. Then came the news that a computer glitch resulting in paying 15 employees more than what they should have received in severance pay, while another 15 received less than what they were owed. Then came the news that Microsoft the 15 who received extra funds to reimburse. And then finally Microsoft announced that it has decided against recovering the funds from the 15 laid-off employees. The reason: bad optics.

However, what is more important to note is that Microsoft admitted the fault with its software. The company responsible for running computers around the globe cannot manage its own accounting!

Was there even a need to make this public? How much could they have possibly recovered from these 15 laid-off employees. Is it worth the negative publicity it received for being insensitive to its workers and not been able to run its own accounting properly.
